What is Group Therapy?
Group therapy is a supportive therapeutic process in which a small number of people come together under the guidance of a professionally trained therapist(s) to help themselves. Generally the group is comprised of non-related individuals who are similar in age, gender or presenting problem. The interactions among the clients are considered to be therapeutic, hence the name, group therapy.
How Does Group Therapy Work?
A therapist creates an atmosphere where confidentiality is respected and mutual support is encouraged. There is an expectation that the personal issues causing someone to seek therapy will inevitably be experienced live in the group sessions.
Group members will be encouraged to understand how they feel, whether the role/situation/challenge being discussed is familiar in their lives, and where and why that behavior developed. From that point, change can be gradually implemented as the parties become more aware of their thoughts and behaviors. Specific focus will be on thoughts and applied behaviors with cognitive restructuring via biblical precepts and principles.
